What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a vision correction procedure that can reshape the cornea in order to correct common refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Laser vision correction is a popular option for patients looking to reduce their reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

We’ll walk you through what to expect during the process and help determine if your eyes can safely undergo the procedure.

Your Laser Vision Correction Options

During your consultation, our team will conduct testing and a thorough evaluation of your eyes that may include:

  • Reviewing your refractive surgery options
  • A full medical evaluation of your cornea
  • Eye dominance testing
  • Reviewing your visual history and refractive stability

Our consultation services cover various laser vision correction options. Our goal is to help our patients understand their options and answer any questions or concerns they may have.

LASIK vision correction is a quick, efficient procedure usually completed in 30 minutes or less.

The procedure begins with your surgeon using numbing drops in your eyes. Your surgeon then uses a precision instrument to create a small flap to access the part of the cornea that needs reshaping. Tiny amounts of corneal tissue are removed using the precision instrument.

Once the reshaping process has been completed, your surgeon will carefully place the flap back into place, and the recovery process can begin. Our team will schedule follow-up appointments up to 6 months after surgery to ensure the recovery process is progressing smoothly.

The Implantable Collamer Lens, or ICL, is a surgically implanted lens designed to correct vision for patients who may not be ideal candidates for traditional LASIK. The lens works with your natural eye to improve focus for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, providing clear, high-quality vision without removing corneal tissue.

ICL is reversible and customizable, allowing your eye care specialist to tailor the treatment to your unique vision needs. A consultation helps determine if ICL is a suitable option for achieving sharper vision and reducing reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

PRK surgery is another form of laser vision correction where your surgeon removes the cornea’s surface layer and reshapes the corneal bed with a precision instrument, similar to LASIK. PRK can be an alternative for patients whose cornea may be too thin to allow LASIK vision correction safely.

The main difference between LASIK and PRK is that PRK surgery involves removing the top layer of the cornea. In contrast, LASIK involves creating a small flap in the cornea and reshaping.

Another difference is the recovery time. PRK recovery can take longer because the cornea’s outer layer needs time to regenerate itself fully.

The SMILE procedure is a newer type of laser refractive surgery. The procedure involves reshaping the cornea by removing a small lens from the central corneal layer using a precision laser.

Your surgeon extracts the lenticule through 4 small incisions on the corneal surface. SMILE is a designed to be a minimally invasive procedure that focuses on correcting simple forms of myopia and astigmatism. Patients usually heal over a few days.

LASEK eye surgery is a vision correction procedure similar to LASIK and PRK. The procedure involves cutting only as deep as the outer of the cornea, and patients may experience a faster recovery time from LASEK eye surgery as opposed to other laser vision correction procedures.

The LASEK procedure is used to help correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

  • Post-surgery check-ups: We will monitor your healing progress and address any concerns to help ensure your vision is improving as expected.

Other Laser Eye Surgery Options

In addition to the most common laser eye surgery procedures, we also offer a variety of other consultation options to meet your unique vision correction needs.

Each procedure is designed to address specific refractive errors or conditions, helping you learn more about care tailored to your lifestyle and visual requirements.

Whether you’re looking for a minimally invasive approach or a comprehensive treatment for post-cataract complications, our team is here to guide you through the available options.

Epi-LASIK is a variation of LASIK that offers a gentle approach to corneal reshaping. In this procedure, a thin layer of epithelium is separated from the cornea using a specialized tool before the laser treatment is performed.

This method can preserve more of the corneal structure and typically results in less discomfort and quicker recovery times compared to traditional LASIK.

Custom Wavefront LASIK takes LASIK to the next level by using innovative wavefront technology to create a personalized treatment plan for your eyes. Its technology can measure your eye’s unique imperfections, allowing for more precise laser adjustments for your specific needs.

Custom Wavefront PRK is an more comprehensive form of traditional PRK that uses personalized wavefront technology to map the unique imperfections of your eyes.

This precise measurement allows for a highly tailored treatment plan, helping to address not only refractive errors but also higher-order aberrations that can affect your vision quality.

TransPRK is a no-touch laser vision correction method that combines the benefits of PRK and other innovative laser technologies. In this procedure, the epithelial layer of the cornea is removed using the laser itself, eliminating the need for a separate step to remove the outer layer.

This results in a more comfortable experience and quicker recovery time.

YAG laser capsulotomy is a noninvasive procedure designed to help treat cloudiness that can develop in the capsule surrounding the lens after cataract surgery. The YAG laser creates an opening in the cloudy capsule, restoring clear vision without the need for additional surgery.

YAG is usually quick and painless and can be performed in our office.

LAS (Laser-Assisted Surgery) is a term that encompasses various laser-based procedures aimed at correcting refractive errors and improving visual acuity.

Their approach uses comprehensive laser technology to reshape the cornea, offering patients a reliable alternative to traditional surgical methods. With LAS, patients can experience precision and therefore faster recovery times, making it a popular choice for vision correction.
