Your Eyes Deserve a Break

We can all find ourselves spending long hours in front of our digital devices, whether you’re working, learning, or relaxing. In recetn years, screens have become an integral part of daily life.

But all that screen time can take a toll on your eyes, leading to a condition known as digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome). At Danville Optometric Group, we can explore different digital eye strain management techniques with you to help offer you some relief.

Let our team help you navigate digital eye strain—contact us to schedule an appointment and address your digital eye strain symptoms today.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain occurs when your eyes get fatigued from spending too much time staring at digital devices like computers, tablets, or smartphones. Symptoms can include:

  • Eye discomfort or dryness
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Difficulty focusing after using a screen
  • Dry eyes

Intense focus on your digital device can be hard on your eyes, and glare or reflection can add even more stress to your vision.

Managing Digital Eye Strain

The first step to addressing your digital eye strain symptoms is booking a comprehensive eye exam with our team.

An eye exam is an important tool that allows our team to discuss your symptoms and review your screen usage habits.

Screens require your eyes to work harder than usual. The constant focusing and refocusing, along with exposure to blue light, can lead to strain and discomfort. Our team explores different management methods that you can add to your daily routine to help control digital eye strain.

Variable Focusing Computer Glasses are custom designed per patient to reduce eye strain and improve eye tracking during any type of digital screen use (desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone). They provide the correct focus points for near to intermediate, and office distances, helping your eyes work more comfortably throughout the day.

Whether standing or sitting, these glasses are customized to your vision needs, improving clarity, reducing fatigue, and supporting long-term eye health while using computers and digital devices.

Some lenses come with a blue light filter—a special monomer placed inside the lens during manufacturing. Once placed inside the lens, an anti-reflective coating is then added on the front and back to aid in the reduction of eye strain, glare, fingerprints, and blue light.

Blue light filters help restore normal circadian rhythm by allowing the body to produce natural melatonin to aid in better sleep, which is critical for youth and adults who use digital devices regularly.

The terms blue light lenses and blue light blockers are not the same as a blue light filter. The blue filter is more technically advanced and provides better health and protection for your eyes.

Anti-reflective coatings (ARC) are designed to reduce harmful glare and allow 100% of usable light to enter the eye and create the best vision. ARC are comprised of multiple layers of materials that are vacuum-coated onto the surface of the lens. The more layers that are applied, the better the clarity. Our anti-reflective coated lenses contain a minimum of 16 layers and have extra oil repelling layers to help reduce fingerprints and dust, along with a hard top layer to prevent scratches.

Poor posture and an improperly configured desk could be big contributors to your digital eye strain.

Follow these helpful tips to ease your discomfort:

  • Position your screen approximately an arm’s length away (28-32 inches) from your face.
  • Position your screen slightly below your eye level. Do not elevate your laptop or monitors.
  • Ensure your arms don’t rest on your keyboard.
  • Use wrist pads to help relax your neck & shoulders.
  • Do not have your screen directly in front of or behind a window due to reduced contrast ratios.
  • No direct overhead lighting especially fluorescents.
  • Keep your wrists, arms, and legs at 90˚ angles.

Specially designed computer glasses can help support efficiency and reduce eye fatigue and shoulder and neck discomfort while standing or sitting.

The 20-20-20 rule can help give your eyes a break between long work sessions. Intense focus can lead to your eyes becoming dried out or strained.

The 20-20-20 rule involves:

  • Looking away from your screen every 20 minutes
  • Focusing on something 20 feet away
  • Looking at the object of focus for at least 20 seconds

Digital eye strain and dry eye disease can go hand-in-hand. Not blinking enough during long work sessions can lead to your eyes becoming dried out and strained. Artificial tear eye drops can be an excellent option to keep your eyes lubricated and provide much-needed relief.

The lighting of your setup can help prevent digital eye strain. Lighting that is too dim or too bright can have a negative effect on your eyes.

Finding a balance is important, and adjusting screen brightness so you don’t have to squint or strain your eyes can be beneficial. Glare is also a contributing factor to eye strain and is important to consider in your setup.
