Understanding Dry Eye

Dry eye disease occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the quality of your tears is poor, leading to irritation, discomfort, and potential damage to the eye’s surface.

Factors like aging, environmental conditions, screen time, contact lens use, and certain medical conditions can all contribute to dry eye.

Risk Factors & Symptoms of Dry Eye

The cause and symptoms of dry eye vary from patient to patient. We’ll perform an in-depth evaluation of your eyes and discuss the symptoms you’re experiencing to help determine what’s causing your dry eyes.

Your tear film plays an essential role in keeping your eyes healthy. The tear film is made up of 3 important layers:

  • Mucus layer—responsible for keeping your tears fastened to your eye
  • Watery layer—keeps your eye hydrated and washes away bacteria
  • Oily layer—prevents your tears from evaporating too quickly

When there is a problem with any of these 3 layers, you can experience the symptoms of dry eye disease.

Some risk factors for dry eye can include:

  • Age: Our eyes produce less tears as get older.
  • Environment: Dry air, wind, AC, screen usage, etc., can contribute to dry eye.
  • Ultraviolet light: Exposure to UV rays can affect tear quality.
  • Gender: Females are more likely to experience dry eye symptoms.
  • Medications: Certain medications can contribute to dry eye.
  • Medical conditions: Some medical conditions can lead to dry eye (like diabetes or arthritis).
  • Contact lenses: Wearing contacts regularly can increase the risk of dry eye.
  • LASIK: Certain eye surgeries may lead to dry eye symptoms.

Once we’ve detected the cause, we can create a customized treatment plan to bring you relief.

Common symptoms of dry eye can include:

  • Stinging, or scratchy sensation in your eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Redness in the eyes
  • Blurred vision or eye fatigue
  • A feeling like something is in your eye
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Watery eyes (your body’s response to dryness)

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to seek treatment to prevent further discomfort or potential complications.

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the most common underlying causes of dry eyes—in fact, it is responsible for 70–90% of dry eye cases. The most common signs of beginning dry eye are styes, also known as hordeolums. Repetitive styes leads to chronic inflammation, which causes dry eyes.

MGD is a chronic and progressive condition that affects the glands in your eyelids that produce the tear film’s oily layer. The oily layer is essential for stopping your tears from evaporating too quickly. We offer treatments like OptiLIGHT by Lumenis and Photobiomodulation by MD Elite to help address MGD.

Diagnosing Dry Eye

Getting to the root cause of your dry eye symptoms is key to providing the right treatment. Our diagnostic methods include:

  • Meibography: An infrared imaging test that assesses the health of your meibomian glands.
  • Dyes & Staining: Testing that can reveal eye surface changes caused by dryness.
  • Automated & Subjective TBUT (Tear Breakup Time Testing): A test that measures how long it takes for your tears to evaporate.
  • Schirmer’s test: A test that measures tear production levels to diagnose dry eye.
  • InflammaDry: A rapid diagnostic test that detects elevated levels of MMP-9, a marker of inflammation, in the tear film, helping to diagnose dry eye disease caused by inflammation.

OptiPLUS by Lumenis uses dual-frequency radiofrequency (RF) technology to manage dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. An FDA-cleared technology, OptiPLUS by Lumenis applies heat across several layers of the skin to help improve meibomian gland function and boost collagen production.

OptiPLUS treatments can help:

  • Increase tear production
  • Reduce inflammation

triLift by Lumenis is a facial muscle treatment that stimulates the muscles, tightens the skin, and improves volume, all in a single session. By restoring healthy muscle tone through electrical stimulation, triLift supports both eye comfort and facial rejuvenation.

The system combines dynamic muscle stimulation (DMSt), TriPollar radiofrequency (RF), and ultrathin RF microneedling to enhance structure, contour, and texture around the eyes.

triLift treatments can help:

  • Improve eyelid function and tear flow
  • Reduce inflammation associated with dry eye
  • Enhance firmness, tone, and texture around the eyes

Punctal plugs are tiny medical devices inserted into the tear ducts to prevent fluid from draining from the eyes. They help keep the eyes moist and relieve discomfort while being low-maintenance.

Meibomian gland expression is a technique used to gently squeeze out clogged oil from the meibomian glands—located along the edge of your eyelids.

Thick oil can block the glands, stopping oil from reaching the tear film. Once unclogged, healthy oil can continue to flow back into your tears, improving dry eye symptoms.

Photobiomodulation, also known as Low-Level Light Therapy, helps reduce inflammation and improve tear quality for patients with dry eye.

This noninvasive treatment targets the eyelids and surrounding tissue to support healthier tear production, relieve irritation, and enhance overall eye comfort. Each session is personalized to meet your specific needs for lasting results.

Specialized artificial tears, or medicated eye drops, may be a useful option for managing dry eye symptoms.

Recently, phosphate-free tear formulas, usually with higher concentrations of hyaluronic acid, have become available for patients with tear deficiencies. We can help you find the right formula for your eyes.

Certain nutrients and vitamins can help manage dry eye. Omega-3s are especially beneficial for those with dry eyes. Fish, like salmon, sardines, and mackerel, are good sources of omega-3s, as are walnuts and flaxseed. Omega-3 supplements are another way to get more of the nutrients you need to enhance the overall health of your eye tissue.

Heat therapy can be extremely effective if delivered and applied correctly to the eyelid margins.

We use a specific type of heating pad that reaches over 109 degrees and has been clinically proven to help melt the meibum (oil) back to its liquid state, helping to keep your eyes hydrated. The extent and time of the treatment is customized in your dry eye evaluation.

The TearCare System is intended for the application of localized heat therapy in adult patients with evaporative dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), when used in conjunction with manual expression of the meibomian glands.

TearCare helps deliver targeted, regulated warmth to the eyelids, promoting efficient release of oils from the meibomian glands—crucial for stable tear film. This process can help optimize tear production and reduce evaporation, alleviating dry eye symptoms.

TearCare’s approach is designed to be precise and non-invasive, offering a quick, comfortable, in-office procedure. By targeting tear quality and quantity, TearCare can significantly improve ocular comfort, vision clarity, and overall eye health for those struggling with dry eye.
