Protecting Your Vision, Preserving Your Health

Diabetes not only affects your blood sugar, but your vision as well. Diabetes can lead to serious eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Regular diabetic eye exams are essential for early detection and prevention of vision loss. Our team uses diagnostic technology to thoroughly examine how diabetes is linked to vision loss in our patients.

We believe in keeping our patients informed and involved throughout the exam process. Contact us to schedule your diabetic eye exam today.

Why Diabetic Eye Exams are Important

Diabetes can increase the risk of developing vision issues like myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy—the leading cause of preventable blindness in the U.S.

Diabetic retinopathy damages the retinal blood vessels, but a diabetic eye exam can help our team diagnose diabetes-related or potentially vision-threatening issues and recommend a personalized treatment plan.

Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy

One of the main risks for diabetic patients is diabetic retinopathy, where high blood sugar levels damage the small blood vessels in the retina. If untreated, this can lead to vision loss. During your exam, we will check for:

  • Microaneurysms: Tiny bulges in blood vessels
  • Hemorrhages: Leaking blood vessels
  • Exudates: Fatty deposits from leaking fluids
  • Macular edema: Swelling in the central retina, which can cause blurred vision

If we detect any signs of diabetic retinopathy, we will create a customized treatment plan, which can include lifestyle changes, medications, or referrals to retinal specialists for further care.

Our Diagnostic Tools

Untreated or unmonitored diabetes can lead to complications that may not show symptoms until significant damage has already occurred.

To avoid damage, our team uses diagnostic technology to help obtain clear, detailed images of your eyes to assist with early detection and treatment. Consistent eye exams allow us to monitor potential vision-threatening changes over time.

Fundus photography is a diagnostic method that records and receives color images of the interior surfaces of the eye. It’s detailed imaging allows us to monitor developing vision issues and their progression over time.

Fundus photography is used to view the effects of diabetic retinopathy on your eyes.

OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography) provides your optometrist with detailed images of the layers in your vitreous and retina. We use the Essilor OCT 500, which can help us detect diseases like diabetes, macular degeneration, and glaucoma early.

An ultrasound is a diagnostic tool that helps our team test for abnormalities in the eye. As it can provide a clearer view, ultrasounds are useful for helping us personalize your treatment plan.

Anesthetic drops may be used to numb the eye and minimize any discomfort.

Anterior segment photography allows our team to examine the front-most region of the eye, including the cornea, iris, and lens.

Its imaging method is useful for evaluating conditions affecting the eye.
